Gregg L. Mayer, PhD has more than 20 years
experience as an entrepreneur, management consultant, and company
president in
a variety of settings in the healthcare industry. Gregg
received his BA in biology in 1981 and his PhD in physiology
in 1987, both from the University of California, Berkeley.
During
his years at UC he was also a co-founder and President of Berkeley
Antibody Company, Inc. (BAbCO), a biotechnology services company,
now a subsidiary of Covance, Inc. In 1986, Gregg joined
Vivigen, Inc., a Nasdaq company operating the country’s
largest prenatal testing business, as Vice President and became
President in 1988. Business Week magazine named
Vivigen one of “The Best Small Growth Companies in America” in
1988 and 1989. Vivigen was later acquired by Genzyme Corporation.
From 1990 to 1992, Gregg moved to Japan
to study in the Japanese language program at Keio University
in Tokyo. At the same time,
he was also a research student at both Keio University’s
Graduate School of Business Administration and The National Children’s
Hospital Research Center.
After returning to the US in 1993,
Gregg joined the San Francisco office of McKinsey & Company
where he worked on hospital and managed healthcare projects until
1995, when he established his own management consulting practice.
He has spent the last 12 years focusing
on the two largest health care markets in the world, the US and
Japan. Clients include
US and Japanese companies in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology,
medical device, clinical laboratory, insurance, and managed care
sectors. He was Kaiser Permanente International’s
Director for Japan from 1996-1998.
Gregg is a founding
board member of the Disease Management Association of Japan,
and the Japan Society for Health Support Sciences, the two leading
disease management organizations in Japan. He is a lecturer
and writer about healthcare in both the US and Japan.
